Cashmere Throw, Baby Blanket

The Cashmere name comes from the Kashmir province of India where it first caught the attention of Europeans in the early 1800s. Today very little of the world's supply comes from India. Most cashmere comes fromChina, Mongolia and Tibet.

The goat hair fibers are collected in the spring when the animals molt. It takes a cashmere goat four years to grow enough hair for one sweater. China and Mongolia generally remove the down by combing it, whereas New Zealand, Afghanistan, Iran, and Australia use shears.

The soft inner hair is separated from the course outer guard hair and then the it is ready to be spun into yarn to weave a cashmere sweater, cashmere scarf, cashmere throw, or any other cashmere product. Pashmina is the finest classified cashmere.

Experts claim cashmere is eight times warmer than wool. It is extremely warm to protect goats from the cold mountain temperatures. The fibers are very adaptable and easily made into fine to thick yarns, and from light to heavy-weight fabrics.  The high moisture content allows insulation properties to change with the relative humidity in the air, making it suitable to wear in all climates.

Tips on Caring for your Cashmere/Pashmina:

The best way to take care of your Cashmere/Pashmina garments, and to make them last, is to handle them carefully. Cashmere should be cared for like a fine wool. To keep them looking new, follow these simple steps: Hand wash knits in cold water, using a cleanser for fine washables. Woven garments should be dry cleaned. Store knitwear flat in a drawer after folding with tissue. Hang woven garments only on padded hangers.  Treat stains as quickly :rinse immediately with cold water, as hot water may set the stain. If garments get wet, allow to dry away from direct heat, then brush with the nap At the end of the season, clean and place garments in  a cool, dry place; fold knits and store in a chest or drawer Moth balls/crystals will help protect the garments from moths.
